Piglets are born

Eight piglets were born this month to the adult Porridge and Rice sow, the first born to the charity herd.

The charity now has four females for breeding, one adult and three young piglets. In July, three more sows will be added to the charity pig herd giving the charity a total of seven sows for breeding.

Pigs sell well at good prices in Nairobi so the herd will help to raise funds to support the work of the charity.

Sweet Potato at Heri

Until recently, all sweet potato grown by Porridge and Rice, has been grown at Compassion School.

This is changing with Heri Junior School planting a local field with yellow sweet potato this month.

The charity will soon produce more sweet potato than pupils can eat. The excess will be sold generating funding for the work of the charity.

Chicken Expansion

The Porridge and Rice chicken project continues to grow and expand. This month the chicken house will be doubled in size to allow for multiple flocks of different ages to be kept at the same time.

Thank you to Yellow Flower Foundation for the funding they provided to help make the chicken project a reality. Without your support, Porridge and Rice would not be where it is today.

New Design Sanitary Pads

Girls shouldn't have to miss school because of their periods.

Porridge and Rice continues to purchase sanitary pads from ZanaAfrica for the girls at its schools.

Many Porridge and Rice cannot afford sanitary pads, and resort to unhygenic solutions or simply stay at home while they are menstruating, missing out on a quarter of their lessons.

ZanaAfrica are consistently working on improving their sanitary pads, and Porridge and Rice are now using their newest design.

FGM in Samburu

Six members of the Kenyan Porridge and Rice leadership team attended an FGM workshop in Samburu organised by Pastoralist Child Foundation.

The team were invited by Pastoralist Child Foundation. to learn how they combat cruel practices of FGM and child marriage, and promote girls' rights in a society where women are denied the same rights as men.

It was a most informative experience that will help enhance the PaR Gender and Children's Rights programme.

Stationary Donation

Rotary Aldershot has donated a large quantity of pens, pencils, and other stationary like rubbers and rulers.

A member of Rotary Aldershot has a contact which passes excess and unusable stock to them for distribution to charity.

Plot Purchase

Porridge and Rice has purchased 5 plots in the Githingoro slums on which to build new classrooms for Compassion School and a road side store.

Building has begun and will continue as funds become available. The aim is that the store will begin to operate by the end of summer.

Summer Fairs

The charity started the round of local and school Summer Fairs in May to raise awareness and funds like

  • Orleans School Fair
  • Hands Fair
  • Thistleworth Family Day

More are scheduled including the Trafalgar Primary School Fair and Hampton Hill Summer Fair.
